Math with friends!!

Last week in math we learned what an attribute was.  We discussed different kinds of attributes that we could sort objects by.  We came up with all kinds including size, shape, color, etc.  We then worked with a partner to pick an attribute, sort our objects, and then label each of our groups.  Once we sorted our objects one way, we picked a different attribute and sorted them in a different way!  I saw not only great sorting, but great teamwork too!!!  Great job everyone:)

Thanksgiving fun!

We celebrated Thanksgiving with our friends from Mrs. Foley's class and a few parent volunteers!  We learned the story of the first Thanksgiving and made bracelets to go along with the story.  We painted our hands to look like turkeys and we did a fun activity book too!

50th day of school!!

Hard to believe that we celebrated the 50th day of school last week!  We celebrated with a few fun activities using the number 50.  We colored and counted 50 objects, practiced tracing numbers 1-50, and even drew a picture of ourselves at age 50!!  Many of us looked taller with lots of wrinkles in our pictures:)  You can practice counting to 50 (or beyond) at home too!!

Meet our new reading helper...Eagle Eye!

Last week we met a new friend that helps us when we come to a tricky word in our reading.  "Eagle Eye" reminds us to look at the picture when we are stuck.  Often times the picture has the clue that we need!  Eagle Eye has a few more reading friends that we will be introduced to very soon!!!  Ask your child to tell you about Eagle Eye and how he helps us read tricky words:)

Painting pumpkins with Mrs. Foley's class

We had so much fun painting our pumpkins with our friends from across the hall!  I saw some very colorful and creative designs! I hope you enjoyed them too:)

Fire station field trip!

We had a great time on our field trip to the fire station!!!  We learned about the ABC's of fire safety, we saw the fire fighters' gear and got to see what it feels like,  and we had a tour of the station!  Thank you to the Gorham Fire Station for having us!  We LOVED it!!!

Writing news

We've been working hard on our writing!  Every week we are coming up with ideas and then we draw and label a picture that tells our story.  We are slowly starting to write word wall words in our sentences and we are even starting to "stretch out" some words by writing the sounds we hear!  I love reading their stories and I am very impressed with the progress I have seen already!!

Practicing our word wall words:)

Reading fun!

We read the book Fix it Duck this week and learned about the setting of a story.  We had fun making the duck character too!  Ask your child a little about the story and if he ever really fixed anything!  We continued to practice our word wall words (I, am) this week as well as the letters Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk.  Each child now has a book bin that we keep in the classroom.  This is a place where they keep books that they are learning to read.  We are working on being careful readers and pointing to each word as we read it.   When they practice reading at home, help them remember to point to the words as they read!

It was a great week!

We read the story The Little School Bus this week and talked about what a character is.  We also learned our first two word wall words: I, am.  We will practice these words for two weeks before we get new ones.  At the end of the year we will have learned 40 word wall words altogether!  We also practiced reading books!  I sent home a copy of the small paper book that we practiced and the kids were very excited to read this to you at home!

Our first time using the ipads!

Rhyming puzzle team work!

Reading books with friends:)

Fall coloring and writing a "I am" sentence

Painting, handwriting, math and more!

We started the week painting our rocks for the Only One You project!  The kids did awesome and each rock was so unique just like each and every one of us!  We painted butterflies and completed our bulletin board on the life cycle of a butterfly (see pic below of all four projects for each stage of the cycle).  We also started our handwriting and math curriculum this week.   I sent home a family letter and the first homework assignment for math on Friday.   This does not have to be returned to me.   It is just a fun activity for you to do at home with your child to practice counting!   We explored with pattern blocks and discussed what each shape was called and how many sides each shape had.  We also discovered some very interesting designs and patterns that you can make with these blocks!
