It was a great week!

We read the story The Little School Bus this week and talked about what a character is.  We also learned our first two word wall words: I, am.  We will practice these words for two weeks before we get new ones.  At the end of the year we will have learned 40 word wall words altogether!  We also practiced reading books!  I sent home a copy of the small paper book that we practiced and the kids were very excited to read this to you at home!

Painting, handwriting, math and more!

We started the week painting our rocks for the Only One You project!  The kids did awesome and each rock was so unique just like each and every one of us!  We painted butterflies and completed our bulletin board on the life cycle of a butterfly (see pic below of all four projects for each stage of the cycle).  We also started our handwriting and math curriculum this week.   I sent home a family letter and the first homework assignment for math on Friday.   This does not have to be returned to me.   It is just a fun activity for you to do at home with your child to practice counting!   We explored with pattern blocks and discussed what each shape was called and how many sides each shape had.  We also discovered some very interesting designs and patterns that you can make with these blocks!

First full week of Kindergarten!!

We had a busy first week!  We read the story Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready For Kindergarten and created a class book about the ways we all got ready for K!  We also created our very own Miss Bindergarten puppets!  This was a multi-step project and the kids did great following directions and helping one another as needed:)  We also learned about "Mat Man" this week and practiced building him with wood pieces, as well as drawing him on paper and white boards!  If you are not familiar with Mat Man he is a person built with the same lines we use when we write our letters and numbers.  He is now posted in our classroom and helps us make sure we have all the important parts of a body when drawing people.  We continue to learn about the monarch butterfly and are creating a small art project for each stage of its life cycle.  Ask your child if they can tell you about the four stages of the butterfly life cycle.  Enjoy a few pictures of our week together:)

Another butterfly release!

We released our second butterfly today!  We named this one "Slinky".  I LOVE the smiles in this picture!!!

First days of kindergarten!

We are off to a great start!  Last week we spent a lot of time learning names and all about each other.  We shared our "All About Me" banners that you made at home and we started an "All About Me" book that we are making here at school.  We used the mystery box to learn about different classroom tools that we will be using this year (crayons, glue, scissors, etc) and we co-created a list of classroom rules for everyone to follow in order to make this a fun kindergarten year!!  The class brainstormed and came up with pages and pages of rules that we should and should not do, but then we realized they all fit into 4 very simple, important rules...be safe, be kind, be helpful, be a learner!  We made a poster of these rules as a reminder for our classroom and each child signed their name to show that they agreed to follow these rules throughout the year.  Ask your child if they remember what the four rules are:) We also started our science unit on the life cycle of a monarch butterfly and were able to release our first butterfly outside!  We named it Gummy Bear:)  We still have a few caterpillars and 1 chrysalis to observe.  The kids LOVE watching them change and grow!!!  Enjoy the pictures from last week!  I tried to get everyone playing outside, but they move around quickly and are hard to catch!!!
